Update on Exterior Siding and Shaker Siding Choices

I'm not too happy to report that our community has VERY little selection and no option for darker exterior colors. Pretty bummed. All the pictures on Google show beautiful blues, greens, and even darker tans. Not available in our community. We get 9 choices of siding and shaker colors (4 of which are in the cream/white hues!!!). I guess they want everyone to look almost the same... Ughhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!! :-(((((((

1.Classic Cream:
2.Dover White
3.Graphite Gray
4.Irish Thistle
5.Island Pearl
6.Natural Almond
7.Sandy Tan
8. Silver Mist
9.Spanish Olive

This was what I was trying to achieve (bottom picture). I can't even get a darker tan than the top picture (that IS the darkest!) Now what!!????

  1. Never thought of it, but I am assuming that they do want the color schemes of the home to compliment one another- even though you can't have the exact same color as your next door neighbor or the person across from you. Did you try just going through the color scheme book to see if something else appealed to you? Like you I immediately dismissed the whites and creams- not enough character for me. I decided to give the French Roast door a try and even I don't like- the door is going all out red, lol.

    1. You know what they say about red doors??... Tee hee. Just kidding. Our neighbors used to joke with us all the time. We have a red door currently on our farmhouse too. I had no idea what it meant until 4 yrs ago but it's funny how people say this about a red door. Haha!

  2. Try not to get bummed. I bet if you drive around the development and see those colors on houses, you might be surprised. We saw a green color that actually looked a little gray. I bet you'll be able to find some colors that are really close to what you envisioned

  3. LChapman & Matthew, going over to look at their design book on Sunday. Does it actually show real houses and what it may look like? The samples are so tiny. The SR emailed me all names so I can research online but we really hoped for darker slate blue with a stone or a darker green with stone to look more like a "craftsman/mountain" style. Our neighborhood doesn't offer those darker colors I'm envious of on-line. And even the darkest tan is called Sandy Tan (image on top picture). There really are not dark colors. Even the Spanish Olive, Irish Thistle, & Graphite Gray are not dark. Thanks for listening. I'll have to see how it all looks when put together & look through their color book.

  4. I think the house a couple of doors down from us is either Irish Thistle or Spanish Olive but it actually looks like a dark gray. I think it looks darker because of the tan color accent siding. You'd be surprised how much a siding color changes when you add different accents. I would really suggest driving to a few different RH communities to check out colors. We decided not to pick based on the swatches. Hope that helps. Good luck!

  6. Sterling- come move to Illinois. We have Hardie board siding. There is a blue option and a VERY green option. You would love it! Haha. The house going up next door is blue.

All the colors compliment each other so it's a good thing.

  7. Haha Bridget (by the way, your name was one of our name choices for our twin girl. :-) !!

Well, my SR was kind enough to send me an explanation as to why the darker colors were discontinued:

"We discontinued our dark sidings due to service complaints. The darker siding got hot and started to bow. We replaced siding (to lighter colors) on many houses ."

  8. We really wanted darker siding as well. We really wanted a darker gray, but had to go with the Graphite. Hopefully, you will find something you like.

  9. Congratulations on your house! We bought in the same development back in October. We are lot 4 BH.Which I hear has been replaced with the Sewickley. We went with the Irish Thistle with the black metal roof. It seems as though it will look nice. They break ground in two weeks. We can't wait. RH has been really good about helping us push back a few months. MT was great but I know how you felt in your earlier post about feeling rushed. I think it is just the way most builders are. A buddy of mine is a PM for TB and he said they are the same way. It helps them keep the houses on track. Good luck with the building process. She wants me to start a blog once our home starts construction. We will see It looks like alot of work to keep up with it.

    1. Thanks Schi! Nice to meet you neighbor. :-)) You can do the blogging at your own pace. I think at the start it is just often because most decisions are done then and it's a good place to research and hear how others experience has been. But don't put pressure on yourself to start if you don't want to. ;)
We actually just asked to push our house settlement back into Aug (it was scheduled for June). We got the approval. So that was nice to hear. We go tomorrow to look at exterior (I'm told we have until next weekend to decide. I think our 21 days is up then. We will put our Sold sticker up too tomorrow, hopefully. We are Lot 41. All the wooded lots were taken when we committed. But we are content because at least it doesn't back up to other houses. That was one thing we didn't want & we wanted a walk out basement.
Stop by the blog and give your input or ask any questions. Look forward to meeting you soon!

  10. Thanks Sterling, My wife and I have our pre-construction meeting on Thursday. We cant wait. Ive been looking at some of the blogs for questions to ask and they have been helpful. I saw your question about the exterior stone and we ran into the same thing. We chose the Ridge Chardonnay, It will be for the exterior as well as our fireplace. Of course I saw some pictures of the Bucks county Ledgestone at other Ryan developments and it looks great. To bad they dont offer it in our development. You could probably ask MT what the houses that are already built have on their exterior. Maybe that could help you. Good luck!

    1. Good luck on Thursday! Exciting times. My husband will be there Thursday night for a Guardian appt.
I actually emailed MT today asking about the Bucks Co stone & seeing if she can push for it in our community. With 50% still left to sell maybe more Buyers will want it. Crossing fingers! We did drive through a community up in Quakertown that had the Shade Mt stone (no one in our community has it yet) and it wasn't too bad actually up close with the Sandy Tan siding. We may drive there Sat just to look at it again.
Good luck on Thursday! Husband's name is Chris if you see a guy in the model.
